Coming out stories have, of course, a profound effect on the straight people involved. I had a very close friendship with a young woman who was in the closet for years. Our friendship was so close that she literally felt that her very life depended on my acceptance of her.

Coming out to me was, she said, the most difficult thing that she ever had to do. And when she finally did, it was the first time in my life that I realized that my opinion really, really matters.

Her coming out story remains the single most important event in my life.

Thank you, John. I appreciate your comments on my blog.

The same could be said about me, with my best friends (who are straight). I came out to them when I was 19 after my first "relationship" failed. I needed emotional support... and it was so important to finally be able to talk about my life with other people. It wasn't easy for any of us, but their eventual acceptance meant the world to me.

I will write the coming-out blog as soon as I get a break from work.
